Exclusive: Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras has unveiled the line-up for its exclusive Taylor Square Takeover – a premium viewing area for parade night – as it enters the final release of ticket sales.
With just 22 days until the Mardi Gras parade on March 1 and nine days until Fair Day, it was revealed on Friday that the music line-up for the Taylor Square Takeover will feature DJs Dan Azzo, DJ Eddie, Mason Browne, plus a Mega Kylie Minogue set by Diva Cups. Universal Sydney drag queen Champagne, as well as drag artist Danni Issues, will perform shows.
In years past the Taylor Square space has been occupied by Mardi Gras’ Diamond Club pop-up, which included a grandstand overlooking the parade. In contrast, this year’s event will have more of a block party-style vibe with no grandstands, and include bars, entertainment and food.
Adjacent to the Taylor Square party is the Destination NSW viewing area. The government agency is a major partner of Mardi Gras, last year providing it a crucial funding boost of $1.1 million — half of which was subsequently covered by the City of Sydney
Tickets to the Taylor Square party, which starts at 6pm and goes for five hours until 11pm, are $183.20 in the final release and include one free drink on arrival and access to toilets. The party features an Aperol Spritz bar selling all types of drinks for purchase, as well as Mexican street food.
There’ll also be a giant colourful neon photo station for patrons to capture their Mardi Gras moments. Relay TV screens will also be placed across the site so you don’t miss any of the action.
“We knew Mardi Gras needed to evolve, and reimagining the Taylor Square experience was a key part of that,” Mardi Gras chief executive Gil Beckwith told Gay Sydney News.
“Diamond Club had been around for years, and while it was beloved, it was overdue for a refresh.
“We wanted to create something that felt like a massive, open-air celebration. No barriers between you and the party, no grandstands – just a space where you can dance, drink, and soak it all in.
“But also, the reality is, last year was a tough financial year for us, and we had to make smart choices to ensure the future sustainability of the festival.”
The introduction of the new space comes as Mardi Gras seeks to cut costs amid a cost-of-living crunch, which is leading to higher event costs and an economy where all major festivals are struggling to survive.
“Removing the massive infrastructure of Diamond Club was a significant cost-saving measure, but rather than just cutting back, we saw an opportunity to create something new,” Beckwith said.
“Taylor Square Takeover strips things back while still delivering an incredible experience – immersive, high-energy, and right in the thick of the parade. It’s a shift that not only makes sense financially but also gives people an even more dynamic way to celebrate Mardi Gras.”
Beckwith described the takeover as “a really premium experience”.
“Think of it like a VIP pass – you get right into the action, private bars, a free drink, and a front-row spot without the crowds.
“Plus, five hours of non-stop music and entertainment right at the heart of the parade. It’s for those who want to soak in the magic of Mardi Gras with a little extra sparkle.”
If slumming it in the public parade viewing spots with everyone else in the street sounds uncomfortable and you can’t afford the Taylor Square party, there are other cheaper options.
Mardi Gras’ Club Cindy, at the Moore Park end of Flinders Street, will also offer bars, food trucks and amenities for $63.20.
Another parade viewing spot, Sideshow, offers standing tickets for $103.20 (seated tickets are sold out).
“Although much cheaper than Taylor Square Takeover, they [Club Cindy and Sideshow] still offer that premium space to turn parade night into its own party,” Beckwith said.
