Supercharged Sydney offers a new style of drag night

An “electro-pop romp through time and space” is coming to Chippendale next week with the launch of a cabaret-style approach to drag.

Coming Friday, September 29, Supercharged Sydney is taking over Knox Street Bar for an evening of sit-down entertainment.

Host and producer Zelda Crybaby said the event will celebrate drag’s diversity and gritty roots by bringing to the stage all types of drag.

“It started as me wanting to produce a silly little show with my friends and I, but it turned out to be so much more,” said Crybaby.

The cabaret approach will allow for a more intimate experience, she said.

Similar intimate drag and open mic experiences have been put on at Oxford Street’s Ching-a-Lings bar via events such as GAWJ (by drag entertainer Michelle Mayhem) and Hyde & Seek (by Alice Hyde).

Grove Bar in Kings Cross also often puts on nights of drag entertainment with performer Victoria Mami and others.

“[This style] really brings the audience into the performance, which is something I’ve noticed a lot of people yearn for in my short time doing drag,” Crybaby said of Supercharged.

The show features a variety of up-and-coming talent including Alexia Vonhell, Cookie Kutter, Hiraya Espinosa, Kat Abolic, Ike, London Briidge and Theresa Problem – and it’s all supported by DJ Bo Smyth.

“There’s this obsession with dividing shows into particular niches, really, and with Supercharged I wanted to break those barriers down,” said Crybaby.

“Drag is for everyone, so why shouldn’t our shows also be an open door for those looking to experience the art of drag in whatever forms it may take on that stage.”

The event will take place 8-11pm. Tickets are $20 and available at bit.ly/supercharged-reloaded.
