Sydney’s inner west is about to get loud, proud and competitive, as Ruby’s Rumble Battle Royale kicks off at The Imperial Erskineville on May 15.
The 12-week drag showdown promises “thrills, spills and chills” as a diverse mix of upcoming queens and kings compete for a $5000+ prize pool – and a shot at drag glory.
Sydney drag queen Ruby Royale will host the competition, which begins with 20 contestants across two heats on May 15 and 22 at The Imperial Basement. The top 12 will then face off over the next 10 weeks.
The competition features weekly themed challenges that will push performers well beyond a standard lip-sync. Contestants will be tested on everything from look design to queer icon impersonations – and even a drag “fear factor” challenge.
“We’re testing to see if they’re ready to do the hardest job in the world: DRAG,” said the Imperial.
Each week, audience members vote to save their favourite performer from elimination, making live attendance not just fun, but critical.
“With iconic drag queens and kings on the judging panel, you’ll be coming back week after week to see what happens next,” the Imperial said.
This year’s announced performers include a wide range of styles and personas: Winter Haze, Zephyr, Mary J Warner, Maya Polo-Geez, Oasis, Questina, Sheza Gaia, Tala, Donna Ke’Baby, Dusty Wilde, Gothic Marika, Hiraya Espinosa, Lucy S Diamond, Lui Lilac, Angela Fever, Cherry Payn, Christine Lox, Count Fuckula, Diana Heelz, and Dirty Chai.
The Imperial Hotel, a mainstay of queer nightlife since 1983, continues to act as a cultural launchpad for drag artists across the gender and performance spectrum. Ruby’s Rumble Battle Royale offers a platform where newcomers can shine, experiment, and connect with a broader community of artists and fans.
So whether you’re into lashes and lycra, glitter and gore, or charisma and camp, this year’s competition is shaping up to be a wild ride worth watching.
