Late-night Oxford St Italian restaurant Big Poppa's to re-open

Late-night Oxford Street Italian restaurant and cocktail bar Big Poppa's will re-open on Wednesday.

The re-opening of the venue – which plays hip-hop music in its basement and has a restaurant at ground level – follows redevelopment works by its landlord.

Open until 3am each night of the week, Big Poppa's serves modern Italian dishes, gourmet cheeses and a large selection of hand-curated wines.

Its return will provide a much-welcome late-night alternative to a kebab, burger or slice of pizza.

Announcing its re-opening on Saturday, Big Poppa's said its opening hours would be 5pm to 3am Monday to Sunday. It said it had a fresh menu and that DJs will play on Sundays.

Big Poppa's manager Rowan McKay recently posted on "The Sydney Bartender Exchange" Facebook group that he was on the hunt for several full-time roles

McKay said he was looking to hire a full-time restaurant supervisor, a head barback/cellar supervisor, as well as casual wait staff and bartenders.

"If you love cheese, wine, hip-hop and providing exceptional service in a relaxed environment, we'd love to hear from you," he said.

"Feel free to apply via Seek … or if you'd like any further information or have any questions, feel free to shoot me a DM or an email at [email protected]."

Big Poppa's opened in July 2016.

Freshly made pasta and artisanal cheeses feature on the food menu, while the wine list combines classic Italian styles with new Australian producers, "unique offerings" from the rest of the world and "plenty of funky skin-contact options".

Big Poppa's is part of a group that includes Caribbean-themed bar The Lobo and French-inspired restaurant Kittyhawk in Sydney's CBD and Bartolo Wine Room in Surry Hills.

It was voted Australia's best bartender's bar in 2017.
